MSK Ultrasound in Etobicoke — Same-Day Musculoskeletal Scans Available

By Kam Chhabra, MRT(N), CCPA — Physician Relations Manager, Vitacorp

If your shoulder has been bothering you for weeks, your Achilles is acting up after a run, or your knee doesn’t feel right after a fall, your doctor may have ordered a musculoskeletal ultrasound. More commonly known as an MSK ultrasound, this is one of the most useful imaging tools for diagnosing soft tissue injuries — and it’s one of the things we do well here at Vitacorp.

Here’s what it involves, what it can find, and how to get it done quickly in Etobicoke without sitting on a wait list.

What Is an MSK Ultrasound?

MSK stands for musculoskeletal — meaning the muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and joints of the body. An MSK ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images of these structures, specifically the soft tissue ones that don’t show up clearly on X-ray.

X-ray is great for bones. But if you’ve torn a tendon, developed tendinitis, have a ganglion cyst, or have fluid building up in a joint, X-ray can’t see it. Ultrasound can. It creates live, moving images that a skilled sonographer can use to evaluate the texture, continuity, and health of soft tissue structures in a way no static image can match.

One of the other advantages of ultrasound is that it can be performed dynamically — meaning the technologist can ask you to move the joint while they scan, which reveals things that only appear when the muscle or tendon is under tension. That kind of real-time evaluation is something you can’t get from an MRI image taken with you lying still.

What Can MSK Ultrasound Diagnose?

MSK ultrasound is ordered for a wide range of musculoskeletal concerns. Common ones include:

  • Rotator cuff evaluation — tears, partial tears, and tendinitis of the shoulder tendons
  • Achilles tendon — tears, degeneration, tendinopathy
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow — lateral and medial epicondyle tendon assessment
  • Knee — patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon, joint effusion, baker’s cyst
  • Plantar fasciitis — thickening and inflammation of the plantar fascia
  • Hip flexors and IT band — pain assessment around the hip and outer thigh
  • Ganglion cysts — fluid-filled lumps near joints or tendons
  • Wrist and hand tendons — de Quervain’s tenosynovitis and other conditions

If you’re an active person who exercises regularly, a tradesperson who uses your body for work, or someone dealing with a repetitive stress injury from desk work, MSK ultrasound is often the most efficient diagnostic tool your doctor can send you for.

No Radiation, No Claustrophobia, No Long Waits

One thing patients consistently appreciate about Ultrasound vs. MRI is the experience. An MRI requires lying completely still in an enclosed tunnel for 30 to 60 minutes — longer if multiple areas are being imaged — and can trigger anxiety for patients who are claustrophobic. It also involves a significantly longer wait time to get an appointment in Ontario.

An MSK ultrasound at Vitacorp involves lying on an exam table while a technologist moves a probe over the skin surface of the area being evaluated. No enclosed machine. No loud noise. No special preparation. No waiting weeks. We frequently have same-day availability for MSK ultrasound, which means if your doctor hands you a requisition today, you could have imaging done today.

What Happens During the Scan

When you arrive, our team confirms the area your doctor ordered and gets you set up in the exam room. You may be asked to remove a piece of clothing to expose the area being scanned — for example, rolling up a sleeve for an elbow or removing a shirt for a shoulder.

The technologist applies gel to the skin surface and moves the probe over the area. They take still images and measurements, and may ask you to perform certain movements (raising your arm, bending your elbow, flexing your foot) so they can evaluate the tissue dynamically.

For most MSK scans, there’s no discomfort. If you’re dealing with an acute injury and the area is tender, some pressure from the probe might be mildly uncomfortable — let the technologist know and they’ll adjust accordingly. There’s nothing injected, nothing internal, and no radiation whatsoever.

Scan time for a focused MSK exam typically runs 20 to 40 minutes. If multiple areas are being assessed, it may take a bit longer. Results are sent to your referring doctor the same day.

Fast Appointments — This Is Important for MSK

If you’ve injured a tendon or are dealing with significant joint pain, waiting two or three weeks for imaging isn’t just inconvenient — it can mean delayed treatment, continued pain, and the risk of making things worse. We take same-day access seriously at Vitacorp.

Call us at (416) 762-3818 first thing in the morning and ask about same-day availability for your MSK ultrasound. We’ll tell you honestly whether we can fit you in, and what time to come. In many cases, you can call in the morning and be scanned by afternoon.

OHIP Coverage and What to Bring

MSK ultrasound is covered by OHIP when ordered by a physician for a medically indicated reason. Bring your valid Ontario health card and your doctor’s signed requisition. That’s it. No out-of-pocket cost for most patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is MSK ultrasound?

An ultrasound exam that evaluates soft tissue structures — tendons, ligaments, muscles, joints, and bursae. It detects tears, inflammation, fluid, and other conditions that X-ray cannot see.

What conditions can it diagnose?

Rotator cuff tears, Achilles tendinopathy, tennis/golfer’s elbow, plantar fasciitis, patellar tendon issues, ganglion cysts, hip flexor problems, joint effusion, and more.

Is MSK ultrasound better than an X-ray for my injury?

For soft tissue injuries, yes. X-ray only shows bones. Ultrasound visualizes tendons, ligaments, and muscles in real time.

Is it covered by OHIP?

Yes, when ordered by a physician. Bring your valid Ontario health card and signed requisition.

Can I get a same-day MSK ultrasound in Etobicoke?

Often yes. Call (416) 762-3818 in the morning to check availability. Walk-ins also accepted Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

How long does the scan take?

Typically 20 to 40 minutes depending on what area and how many structures are being assessed.
