Walk-In X-Ray in Etobicoke: What You Need to Know Before You Show Up
By Kam Chhabra, MRT(N), CCPA — Physician Relations Manager, Vitacorp
Your doctor handed you an X-ray requisition. Now you’re figuring out where to go, how long it’ll take, and whether you need to book ahead.
If you’re in Etobicoke or anywhere along the Bloor-Danforth TTC line, the short answer is: you don’t.
Here’s what to expect when you walk in for an X-ray at Vitacorp, right across from Islington Station.
No Appointment. Just Show Up.
Walk-in means exactly what it sounds like — no booking, no phone call needed. Come in during clinic hours (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm), check in at the desk, and patients are seen in order.
Most visits run 20 to 30 minutes start to finish. There may be a short wait if it’s a busy stretch, but nothing like the wait at a hospital imaging department.
Vitacorp is directly across from Islington TTC Station, so a lot of patients stop in before work, on their lunch break, or on the way home.
What You Need to Bring
Two things: your doctor’s requisition and your OHIP card.
The requisition is not optional — in Ontario, it’s a legal requirement for almost every diagnostic X-ray. Without it, the clinic cannot proceed, even if you’re ready to pay out of pocket.
Before you leave home, do a quick check:
- Is the right body part listed? A requisition for your wrist doesn’t cover your shoulder — those are different studies.
- Is your name exactly as it appears on your OHIP card? A mismatch causes problems when your report is filed.
No family doctor? Any physician at a walk-in medical clinic can assess you and write a requisition if X-ray is appropriate.
Clothing tip: Avoid metal near the area being scanned — underwire bras, metal belt buckles, snap buttons. Our X-ray technologist will ask you to remove them anyway, so arriving without saves a step.
Is It Covered by OHIP?
Yes. When an X-ray is medically necessary and ordered by a physician, OHIP covers it in full — the imaging and the radiologist’s reading. You should not be paying out of pocket.
OHIP covers the standard exam. Things like immigration medical exams or extra image copies are billed separately. If you’re unsure, call ahead so there are no surprises at the desk.
What Happens During the Scan
Our X-ray technologist will position you based on what the requisition calls for. A hand or foot X-ray is simple and quick. A chest X-ray may require a couple of views and careful positioning. Every step is explained before the image is taken.
The exposure takes a fraction of a second. You won’t feel anything.
Before you leave, images are reviewed to confirm they came out clearly. If something needs to be retaken, it’s sorted while you’re still there.
When Does Your Doctor Get the Results?
Reports go directly to your referring physician, typically within 24 to 48 hours. You won’t receive it directly — the radiologist sends it to your doctor, who follows up with you.
If a few business days pass and you haven’t heard anything, contact your doctor’s office, not the imaging clinic.
If It's Urgent, Go to the ER
Vitacorp handles stable, non-urgent imaging. If you can’t bear weight on a limb, there’s visible deformity, or you’re in severe pain — go to an emergency department. Getting you the right care quickly matters more.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an appointment for a walk-in X-ray in Etobicoke?
No. Vitacorp accepts walk-in patients for X-ray Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm — first come, first served. No booking required.
What do I need to bring to a walk-in X-ray clinic?
Your doctor’s requisition and your valid OHIP card. Check that the requisition lists the correct body part and that your name matches your health card exactly.
Is a walk-in X-ray covered by OHIP?
Yes, when ordered by a physician for a medically necessary reason. OHIP covers the imaging and the radiologist’s report. Bring your health card.
How long does a walk-in X-ray take?
Most visits run 20 to 30 minutes from check-in to walking out. The scan itself takes seconds — the rest is check-in, positioning, and a quick image review before you leave.
When will my doctor get the X-ray results?
Reports reach your referring physician typically within 24 to 48 hours. Contact your doctor’s office — not the clinic — if you haven’t heard back after a few business days.
Can a walk-in clinic doctor write my X-ray requisition?
Yes. If you don’t have a family doctor, a physician at any walk-in medical clinic can assess you and write a requisition if X-ray is clinically appropriate.
