Types of vascular ultrasound available
Vitacorp offer a full range of vascular and Doppler studies at our Etobicoke clinic,
all performed by certified imaging technologists.
Venous Doppler (DVT Screening)
Detects deep vein thrombosis (blood clots) in the legs. Fast, non-invasive, no radiation. Urgently referred patients seen quickly.
Arterial Doppler
Assesses blood flow in the arteries to detect narrowing (stenosis), peripheral artery disease, or poor circulation.
Carotid Doppler
Evaluates the carotid arteries in the neck for plaque buildup — a key stroke risk screening tool ordered by GPs and neurologists.
Renal (Kidney) Vascular
Checks blood flow to and within the kidneys. Often ordered when there are concerns about renovascular hypertension.
Abdominal Aorta Doppler
Screens for aortic aneurysm and assesses abdominal blood vessel health. Often part of a broader vascular workup.
Upper & Lower Limb Venous
Full mapping of venous insufficiency, varicose vein workup, and post-surgical vein assessment for arms and legs.
Who gets referred for vascular ultrasound?
Your doctor or specialist will refer you if they suspect or want to monitor a vascular condition. Common reasons include:
- Leg swelling, pain, or redness (possible DVT)
- Cold or numb limbs (arterial disease)
- TIA or stroke risk assessment (carotid Doppler)
- Uncontrolled hypertension workup
- Varicose veins or venous insufficiency
- Follow-up after vascular surgery or procedure
How to prepare
Get your requisition — your family doctor, cardiologist, or surgeon must refer you. Bring that form to your appointment.
Call ahead — vascular studies require a booked appointment. Call us at (416) 762-3818 to schedule.
Wear loose clothing — easy access to the area being scanned (legs, neck, abdomen).
No special fasting required for most studies — we will confirm any preparation needed when you book.
The scan itself is painless — a probe is gently moved over the skin with ultrasound gel. Typically 30–60 minutes.
Results go directly to your referring physician, typically within 1–2 business days.

Frequently asked questions about vascular ultrasound
Do I need a referral for vascular ultrasound?
Yes. A doctor’s requisition is required for all vascular ultrasound studies. Your family doctor, cardiologist, vascular surgeon, or any specialist can refer you. OHIP only covers the exam with a valid requisition.
Is vascular ultrasound covered by OHIP?
Yes — when performed with a valid doctor’s requisition, vascular ultrasound is fully covered by OHIP. There is no out-of-pocket cost for eligible Ontario residents.
How long does a vascular ultrasound take?
Most vascular studies take between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the type. A simple DVT study may take 30 minutes; a full bilateral venous mapping may take longer. We will give you an estimate when you book.
Is the procedure painful?
Vascular ultrasound is completely non-invasive and painless. A small probe is gently pressed against the skin with a clear gel. There is no radiation involved.
Where are you located relative to Islington TTC Station?
We are directly across the street from Islington Station on the Bloor–Danforth (blue) line. Our clinic is on the 6th floor at Suite 603, 1243 Islington Ave, Etobicoke — in the same building as Life Labs.
