Frequently asked questions about walk-in X-ray in Etobicoke

No appointment is needed for walk-in X-ray services at Vitacorp Islington Station. Our walk-in X-ray clinic in Etobicoke operates on a first-come, first-served basis during regular clinic hours, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. Simply walk in with your OHIP card and a valid doctor’s requisition. You do not need to call ahead. Ultrasound services may require an appointment — call (416) 762-3818 to confirm availability for ultrasound bookings. For X-ray imaging specifically, no booking is necessary.

To receive walk-in X-ray services at Vitacorp, you only need two things: (1) your valid OHIP card and (2) a doctor’s requisition from your referring physician. Without a requisition, OHIP cannot cover the exam. Wear comfortable clothing — if possible, avoid wearing metal near the area being imaged, as you may be asked to remove jewellery or change into a gown. If you are having a specific body area X-rayed, your doctor’s requisition will indicate the exact type of imaging required. There is no need to fast or prepare in advance for most standard X-ray exams.

Yes. Most diagnostic X-ray services at Vitacorp are covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) when medically necessary and accompanied by a valid doctor’s requisition. OHIP covers standard diagnostic X-rays including chest, extremity, spinal, joint, and bone imaging when ordered by a licensed physician. The image interpretation by a licensed radiologist is also covered under OHIP. Patients without a valid OHIP card may still receive services — call (416) 762-3818 for information on private pay options. Note: Immigration X-rays are not covered by OHIP as they are not medically necessary — they are required for immigration purposes. See our Immigration X-Ray page for details.

Most walk-in X-ray visits at Vitacorp take between 15 and 30 minutes from check-in to completion, depending on the type of imaging required and the current patient volume. The X-ray procedure itself typically takes 5–10 minutes — you will be positioned by a certified X-ray technologist, asked to stay still briefly, and the image will be captured in seconds. After the X-ray is taken, you may leave. The images are then reviewed by a qualified radiologist, and the report is sent directly to your referring physician. You do not wait for results on-site.

Yes. A valid doctor’s requisition (referral) is required for all X-ray services at Vitacorp. This is both an OHIP requirement for coverage and a clinical safety requirement — X-ray imaging uses radiation and should only be performed when clinically indicated by a physician. Your family doctor, walk-in clinic physician, emergency department doctor, or specialist can provide a requisition. If you do not yet have a doctor’s requisition, you can visit any walk-in medical clinic to be assessed and receive one if X-ray imaging is appropriate for your condition.

Vitacorp Islington Station offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic X-ray services in Etobicoke, including: chest X-rays (for lungs, heart, and ribs), extremity X-rays (arms, legs, hands, feet, fingers, toes), spinal X-rays (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum), joint imaging (shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, ankle, hip), pelvic and abdominal imaging, skull and facial bone imaging, and immigration chest X-rays for IRCC panel physician exams. We use modern digital X-ray technology that provides high-quality images with minimal radiation exposure. If you are unsure whether we can accommodate your specific type of X-ray, call us at (416) 762-3818.

Yes. Diagnostic X-ray imaging is considered safe when medically necessary. At Vitacorp, we use modern digital X-ray equipment that significantly reduces radiation dose compared to older film-based systems. The amount of radiation in a typical chest X-ray is roughly equivalent to the background radiation you receive naturally in a few days of normal living. Our certified technologists follow strict radiation protection protocols — using lead shields where appropriate and minimizing exposure to only the area being imaged. Vitacorp is accredited by Accreditation Canada / ICHSC, ensuring our imaging practices meet rigorous safety standards.

Yes. Vitacorp can perform X-ray imaging for children when clinically indicated and accompanied by a valid physician’s requisition. Pediatric X-ray imaging may be appropriate for fractures, bone injuries, chest conditions, and other medically necessary evaluations in children. A parent or guardian must accompany minors to the appointment. For children, we take extra care to use the lowest radiation dose necessary for a diagnostic-quality image, following the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle. If you have concerns about X-ray imaging for your child, speak with your referring physician or call our clinic at (416) 762-3818 before your visit.

X-ray results are typically sent to your referring physician within 24–48 hours of your visit at Vitacorp. After the X-ray images are taken, a licensed radiologist reviews and interprets the images and prepares a written report. This report is transmitted directly to the physician who provided your requisition. You do not receive results on-site during your visit. If your results are urgent, your referring physician will contact you. If you have not heard back from your doctor within a few business days, contact your physician’s office directly — they receive results on your behalf.

The clinic is in the same building as Life Labs, making it convenient for patients who need both blood work and imaging on the same visit. The clinic is accessible by TTC (Islington Station exit), by car (street and underground parking nearby), and on foot from the surrounding Etobicoke neighbourhood. Clinic hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

Yes. Vitacorp provides IRCC-compliant immigration chest X-rays for Canadian immigration applicants. If your IRCC-designated panel physician has directed you to obtain a chest X-ray as part of your Immigration Medical Examination (IME), Vitacorp’s accredited facility meets the required standards for this service. Immigration X-rays are not covered by OHIP — the fee is the applicant’s responsibility. Please bring your panel physician’s referral documentation and a government-issued photo ID. Results are sent directly to your panel physician, typically within the same day or the next business day.

Walk-in X-ray imaging at Vitacorp is commonly used by referring physicians to evaluate a wide range of conditions, including: bone fractures, stress fractures, and breaks in any part of the body; joint injuries including sprains with suspected bone involvement; arthritis and degenerative joint disease; chest conditions including respiratory infections, pneumonia, and rib injuries; spinal conditions including disc problems and alignment issues; soft tissue calcifications; follow-up imaging to monitor healing; and workplace or sports injuries requiring documentation.
